DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
In 2017, a team of three students began making a prototype of Squillamorph for their final major project of the Games Arts course at the University for the Creative Arts. The students were James Barrow (that's me, the current developer), Connor Wright, and Sarah Büttner. After graduating in 2018, we were given the opportunity to continue developing the game in the Games Arts Incubator Studio at the university. This gave us a space to work, support with taking the game to market, and the opportunity to showcase the game at industry events.
When our time in the Incubator Studio began in September of 2018, we started developing a new version of the game from scratch. By April of 2019, an early demo was ready. Thanks to the Incubator Studio, we had a stand at EGX Rezzed to showcase the demo to the public. The game was very well received and I was able to gather crucial feedback to improve it. In June of 2019, we had a stand at the first Guildford Games Festival, thanks again to the Incubator Studio. The public enjoyed a much improved game demo and I was able to gather more valuable feedback.
At the beginning of July 2019, our time in the Incubator Studio was over. It was at this point that Connor and Sarah decided to leave the team, on good terms, to pursue their own careers. I will continue to develop the game as a solo developer until its full release. This was when I founded my company, Barrow Studios Ltd. In October 2019, I was able to showcase the game on a stand at EGX, once again thanks to the Incubator Studio. The improvement in feedback compared to the first public showcase in April, told me that the game was going in the right direction. Players really enjoyed the game this time!
In November 2019, I launched the game on Steam Early Access. Since then, I have updated it several times. Each update has brought new features and improvements. In June 2020, I released an update that reworked the core gameplay based on player feedback. This new updated improved the quality of the gameplay and brought some much needed optimisations.
The game still has a long way to go before it is finished. I will continue to post occasional updates on the development log found on the game's website, as I have done since the start of development in the Incubator Studio. This is the place to get a direct insight into how the game is being developed.
